Blue mussel (Mytilus edulis)

The blue mussel is a bivalve mollusc that is typically found in shallow areas. The adult mussel attaches itself to its support (rock/line/rigid substrate) by means of its adhesive byssal threads. Although some mussels are harvested on a cottage-scale from natural beds, the blue mussels marketed commercially are primarily farmed mussels.

Merinov conducts research and development work on mussel farming in lagoon and open water environments on the Magdalen Islands and in bays along the Gaspé Peninsula and North Shore.
